Transgender Day of Rememberance - Sarah Schnaithman - Sunday, November 21, 2021

11/15/2021

Join us as several members of the transgender and gender non-binary community facilitate this Transgender Day of Rememberance Service.
Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester's death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.
"Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people -- sometimes in the most brutal ways possible -- it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered, and that we continue to fight for justice."
- Transgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith

Scheduled speakers are:
Sarah Schnaithman
Noa Boothe
Casey Hohlt

Jensen Luke Matar:
Jensen Luke Matar is an independent, experienced and community commended Transgender Advocate. He is the Coordinator of the Transgender Resources, Advocacy, Networking & Support (TRANS) Program. This program focuses on strategies that reduce discrimination faced by transgender and gender non-conforming people by collaborating directly with the community, educating the community at-large and advocating for policy protections, while providing life dependent support that the transgender community deserves

Through business, community building, leadership development, education and direct advocacy, Jensen has been able to lead a shift in culture around trans narratives and is a vital contributor in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights in Mississippi.
